It’s our third time opening the wonderful Barwitian garden, arguably the best example of naturalistic planting styles in Australia. Previously, we have opened this garden in early and late Autumn. So, this time it will be open to embrace the high summer style of the plantings.
The Barwitian Garden is a natural, wild perennial-based garden that Garden Designer, Ralph Bristow has created and maintains, celebrating what plants give to us, the soil and the fauna. It covers approximately 3 acres set in Barwite, on the Broken River, near Mansfield, Northeast Victoria.
There are thousands of plants, mainly perennials but also with interesting woody plants, shrubs and trees. This garden will sear the senses and elicit sheer joy. It is a living experiment, an evolving, ever-changing alchemy of plants, colour, art, life, the landscape that all coalesce with distinct seasonal changes.
This garden continues to grow and expand, and we're excited to see what Ralph has added into this eclectic mix of perennial plantings.
Please note: There is a long driveway to access the garden. Please either prebook via Trybooking or bring cash because the internet reception can be patchy.
The Barwitian Garden is located on the lands of the Taungurung people. Open Gardens Victoria wishes to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
Extra activities in the area:

The Barwitian Garden is located at the corner of Old Tolmie Rd and Fern Street, Barwite, approximately 10 minutes from Mansfield Town Centre off the Tolmie-Whitfield Road. Turn onto Barwite Rd, then onto Old Tolmie Rd.
