Crome Garden, Kallista

  • Crome Garden 24 Ridge Road Kallista Vic 3791 Australia (map)

The garden has developed over 11 years and has three distinct areas - a house garden, a hillside garden and a lovely gully area.

Springtime is a delight with a vast array of plants and a focus on rhododendron of all shapes and sizes, large Asiatics, azaleas both deciduous and evergreen and vireyas in tree fern tropical ‘rooms’.

The house garden design incorporates the trees planted in the 1980’s of which a highlight is the superb copper beeches. There are also ash, liriodendron, oak , casuarina and eucalypts each creating particular habitats and environments. Shadier areas for rhododendron, fuschia, hydranges and woodland plants. The addition of Japanese maples and occasional rocks has given an additional focal point in this area. There is wide array of perennials and natives for the sunnier, drier areas.

The ‘gully’ is the garden owner’s favourite place with a natural spring bordered by large tree ferns, giving a ‘rainforest feel’.

Crome is the home garden of artist, Prue Crome known for her large colour field paintings that are inspired by the atmospherics of light to expand and contract space. Her art will be for sale at this opening.

Crome Garden is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri People. Open Gardens Victoria wishes to acknowledge the Traditional custodians of this land and we pay respect to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
