In the heart of the picturesque Kiewa Valley, Gremolly is a charming 1.7-acre family garden that has been lovingly developed over 26 years. When the Gregg family first purchased the property, there were little more than a couple of trees and no hint of the expansive garden that would eventually emerge through years of imagination, hard work and shared passion.
Located in the rural community of Dederang (known locally as the ‘Cream of the Country’), Gremolly is blessed with rich soils and reliable seasonal rainfall.
What began with a vegetable patch and fruit trees gradually expanded beyond the home garden to encompass the entire property. Inspired by visits to other gardens and a desire to create something special, the family transformed the landscape into a series of inviting spaces connected by a dry creek bed that winds through the garden. Bordering the creek are plantings of Dietes, Liriopes and ornamental grasses, creating a sense of movement and unity throughout the garden.
Gremolly is a family project, shaped by ingenuity. Old concrete has been repurposed for garden edging, while gas bottles, pallets, a cement-mixer bowl, a concrete tank, an old dairy building and even a car have found new life as distinctive garden features. Throughout the garden, visitors will discover the handiwork of owner and resident stone mason Neil, whose craftsmanship can be seen in retaining walls and other carefully constructed elements. Rescued roses, trees and treasured plants gifted by friends bring memories and stories that add depth and meaning to the garden.
More than 200 roses are featured (pruned by owner Elaine), alongside productive vegetable beds, fruit trees and notable tree specimens, including the frothy white blooms of the ‘June Snow’ dogwood. Visitors are invited to wander the pathways, enjoy the many seating areas and take in the stunning valley views. A highlight is the wisteria-covered arbour beside the pond, a favourite spot to pause and enjoy the peaceful setting.
The open garden will also includes plant sales, homemade preserves, jams, chutneys and sauces, Devonshire teas, and the whimsical Grasshopper Garden Art creations of local artist Kerrie Hay-Smith. With plenty of space to relax and enjoy a picnic, Gremolly offers a warm country welcome and abundant inspiration for gardeners of all kinds.
Toilets are available on premises for use.
